Climate Change
A vast majority of climate scientists throughout the world believe that climate change is real and is caused by human activities, https://climate.nasa.gov/scientific-consensus
I do not pretend to be a well-researched scientist. However from what I’ve read and observed, Climate Changes is a reasonable working theory (SPACE, CLIMATE CHANGE, AND THE REAL MEANING OF THEORY by Piers Sellers).
Climate change aligns with science as we know it but our sample size is so small. We think the earth is 4 ½ billion years old and we only have weather data from around 150 years. There are documented ice ages long before the industrial age. Cataclysmic weather changes happened long before there were atmospheric changes related to human activities. So cards on the table I definitely have a strong climate change lean but with a few reservations associated with sample size.
We know for a fact that reducing the amount of energy we consume will save us money and help the environment. Whether you believe in climate change or not, everyone knows that apart from renewable energy all electrical generation causes pollution.
My beliefs intersect with my life. I love the outdoors. Regardless of the weather I feel better when I can engage nature. Having clean air and water is very important to me. Pollution is taking this away. Are we being good stewards of what we’ve been given? How badly are we ruining it for future generations?
For me taking action to slow down climate change comes down to a Risk – Reward proposition. What is the risk if climate change is true and we didn’t do anything, versus what are the rewards if we make changes to mitigate climate change and later find out it’s not true. The real disaster will be if climate changes is true and we had a chance to do something about it and we didn't.
If climate change is not true, yet we took action and used less energy, wasted less and invested in renewables, what did we really lose? Potentially those actions could slow our economy due to less consumption and there could be some opportunity loss. In the long term that is not a huge penalty. Innovation will occur. We’ll find ways to make money and expand the economy.
Let me say I am very much pro business. Our lives have improved in so many ways from creative business minds. Improvements have ranged from reduced child mortality world-wide to increased food production related to technology. Improvements have ridden on the back of pro business innovation. But are there areas where it would be prudent to embrace policies and actions that could potentially slow down economic growth in limited sectors for the good of future generations? Let’s dialog.
We need to fight against the "Whatever happens, happens" or "Me first" attitude. Our willingness to sacrifice for the common good is critical. I’m not talking socialism. Socialism killed motivation and pride in the former Soviet Union. Let’s not go there. It’s more like business with a conscience. Let’s be smarter. There is value in providing goods and services that are wise for both today and the future. Our collective conscience can encourage business to have a long-term vision.
There are many obstacles to creating a favorable climate change movement. Unfortunately climate change has become a political issue. There is an offshoot attitude growing from the Neo-liberalism camp that promotes the idea that we can't have a dialogue on any issue where we don’t agree. People shut down and in many cases get angry when others try to persuade them to an opposing idea. Let’s fight against this anti-debate culture. Let’s embrace active listening. Let’s not be afraid to actively try to persuade others on matters that are critically important. Let’s dialogue.
Dialogue. That is what IC and Friends is all about. Our tag line is "Creating dialogue one laugh at a time". Humor can be a great bridge to conversation. That is the space I’m trying to engage.
Food for thought.
Take weather models of hurricanes, showing their projected paths, for example. We have all seen them on the news. We have seen the variations between the models.
Some models show the hurricanes making landfall. Other models show hurricanes won't make landfall. But there isn't any question that the hurricane is coming.
This comparison with climate change works at some level. The models know climate change is here and will ramp up. How fast depends on the model.
With the disastrous risk to humanity we need to make decisions today to protect the future.
We can't wait until the hurricane makes landfall before we board up the house.
